The World Health Organization (WHO) has started an investigation into the deaths of over 100 people in South Sudan.
The deaths were reported in Fangak and Jonglei State in South Sudan and initial samples collected in the area returned negative for cholera.
WHO’s Sheila Baya said so far there had been 89 deaths and an investigation was ongoing. The official added that they have decided to send a rapid response team to go and do risk assessment.
She said that it has become increasingly difficult to reach the Fangak area due to flooding. The floods have been so severe that it has caused over 200,000 people to flee their homes and it has been the worst flooding in almost 60 years.
The magnitude of the flooding this year has been immense.
