Kuwait has announced that there will be 40 days of mourning following the death of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.
The country mourns the loss of the leader often described as a seasoned diplomat and a humanitarian champion.
State television announced his death after playing prayers from the Holy Quran, with Royal Court Minister Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al Sabah reading a brief statement, his hands shaking.
“With great sadness and sorrow, the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world mourn the death of the late His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Emir of the state of Kuwait who moved to the realm of the Lord,” the sheikh said.
Kuwait’s Cabinet later announced that Sheikh Sabah has been succeeded by his brother, Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates will also hold a three-day mourning to Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
UAE president His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has also declared a period of mourning to honor the late Kuwaiti leader.
