3 doctors sentenced jail-time, fine, deportation for botched nose job gone that put patient in coma

The Dubai Cessation Court has sentenced three doctors to one-year imprisonment after a failed nose job last year that led to an Emirati woman in a coma and a permanent disability, Gulf News reported.

The doctors—an ENT surgeon from Dominican Republic, an anesthetist from Syria, and a technician also from Syria—were also fined Dh51,000 in temporary compensation for their medical malpractice done to 25-year-old Rawdha Abdullah Almaeeni. They will also be deported after serving prison terms, while the hospital was fined AED300,000.

Earlier, Almaeeni said she sought medical treatment for a nasal block that has been hounding her at the First Med Day Surgery Centre in Dubai.

During the operation, the patient’s blood pressure suddenly dropped.

“Doctors failed to detect it and she suffered a cardiac arrest, starving her brain of oxygen for seven minutes and causing her severe brain damage,” The National reported.

An investigation later conducted by the Higher Committee for Medical Liability showed “serious medical errors occurred during the surgery that caused the victim permanent disabilities.”

The committee also said the surgery led to the loss of Ms Almaeeni’s mental and physical abilities, rendering her fully disabled and in need of constant medical care.
