DOJ: Freed 4th convict on Chiong sisters’ case vows to surrender

The Justice Department has confirmed that the fourth convict on the rape-slay case of the Chiong sisters was among those freed under the Good Conduct Time Allowance system.

Justice Undersecretary Mark Perete, James Anthony Uy, who was also among those convicted in the 1997 rape-slay of sisters Marijoy and Jacqueline Chiong was released last month.

DOJ said Uy is expected to surrender with released convict Josman Aznar.

Two of the first three convicts voluntarily surrendered to authorities, Ariel Balansag and Alberto Caño after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the surrender of convicts released through the GCTA.

Aside from Uy, Aznar, Caño, and Balansag, also convicted in the 1997 rape-slay case were Francisco Juan Larrañaga, James Andrew Uy, and Rowen Adlawan. Larrañaga, who holds dual Filipino-Spanish citizenship, was earlier extradited to Spain in an exchange of convicts arrangement. The two Uy brothers and Adlawan remain in prison.

The convicts on the Chiong sisters rape-slay case were sentenced to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years imprisonment for kidnap, rape, and murder.
