A 73-year-old woman in India gave birth to twin girls and is believed to be the oldest person to give birth.
Erramatti Mangayamma, a farmer from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, became pregnant through IVF, a medical procedure whereby an egg is fertilized by a sperm in a test tube or elsewhere outside the body.
Mangayamma delivered the babies via caesarian section last Thursday, a CNN report said.
Dr. Sanakayyala Umashankar, director of Ahalya IVF, told CNN the surgery went well and the mother and the babies were all healthy.
According to the report, Mangayamma and her husband, 80-year-old E. Raja Rao, have been married since 1962.
The couple was not able to conceive naturally that prompted them to seek medical help in 2018.
After preliminary tests showed positive results, doctors gave the couple one round of IVF treatment.
Due to her advanced age, the mother will be placed under observation for 21 days and will not be allowed to breastfeed.
