POEA requires recruitment agencies to report on HK-based OFWs

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has opted to keep track of Filipinos working in Hong Kong, wherein protest activities have been taking place for several weeks.

The agency has requested recruitment agencies to submit a report on the status of the workers and submit the same to the POEA’s Welfare and Employment Office immediately.

A report is expected every Thursday thereafter.

The deployment ban on allowing OFWs in Hong Kong was raised earlier but the move was frowned upon by labor officials.

The suggestion was raised when anti-extradition protest activities became violent in the last two weeks. The extradition bill was aimed at allowing Hong Kong residents to be sent to mainland China for court hearings conducted by the Communist Party.

Protesters said this violates the one country, two systems policy in place in the former British colony.
