President Rodrigo Duterte tells DOJ, BuCor to block release of Calauan mayor Antonio Sanchez

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra and Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Nicanor Faeldon to not allow the release of convicted rapist and former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez from jail.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, at the sidelines of the National Heroes Day rites in Taguig City Monday morning, told reporters that the President doesn’t want Sanchez to be released from prison as the latter who was convicted of heinous crimes should not be covered by Republic Act No. 10592, as per reports from the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Sanchez and his henchmen were sentenced to seven life terms after being found guilty by the court of raping and killing Eileen Sarmenta and murdered Allan Gomez, both students of University of the Philippines- Los Baños (UPLB) in 1993.

But public outrage sparked after Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra hinted that Sanchez might be among the 11,000 inmates who would be released within next months as he would would benefit from the retroactive application of RA 10592, which lessens the years from an inmate’s sentence because of good behavior.
