Some 57 Filipino special education (SPEd) teachers from different parts of the Philippines have been hired in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the Clark County School district.
This is not the first time Nevada hired Filipino SPEd teachers. Some 105 teachers were recruited in 2018 while 84 were hired in 2017.
The shortage of special education teachers in the United States prompted Nevada to look for more teachers in other countries including the Philippines.
“We were accepted last January so we had six months to prepare, so hinanda po namin lahat ng paper works ng licenses. Its tedious sobra pero all the processes were worth it when we got here in Las Vegas,” A Filipina teacher told ABS-CBN’s Balitang America.
The base salary for new teachers in Clark County is $40,900.
Newly hired teachers were provided with J1 visas who are willing to work for 3 years in Las Vegas. The contract may still be renewed for another two years.
