Will Pantaleon Alvarez seek speakership?

Pantaleon Alvarez has been re-elected as representative of the first district of Davao del Norte, fanning speculations that he might again seek the House speakership, which former Gloria Macapagal Arroyo took away from him last year.

As of 3:50 p.m. Tuesday, Alvarez garnered 163,977 votes, a very wide margin from the 68,193 votes of Anthony Del Rosario of Hugpong ng Pagbabago and the 407 votes of independent candidate Caloy Rafales.

In February, Ron Munsayac, campaign spokesman of the ruling PDP-Laban, said Alvarez was the lead candidate of the party for House speaker in the 18th Congress.

In April, Davao del Norte Second district Rep. Antonio Floirendo announced he would seek the speakership in the next Congress. Alvarez chided his fierce political foe, telling Floirendo to win the congressional elections first.

Floiredo lost to Aldu Dujali by a wide margin in Monday’s elections. Dujali garnered 125,170 votes against Florendo’s 92,679 votes as of Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, PDP-Laban bets Edwin Jubahid and Rey Uy were elected governor and vice governor of Davao del Norte, respectively.

As expected, presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio was re-elected Davao City mayor while her younger brother Sebastian was unopposed in his vice mayoral bid.

Sara won by a landslide with 579,551 votes against the 4,255 votes of Jun Marcellones. Sebastian has 557,277 votes.
