Week-long Sinulog Festival begins in Cebu

Cebuanos kicked off the week-long Sinulog Festival on Wednesday, with the traditional “Walk with Jesus,” procession.

A stretch of Osmeña Boulevard from the Fuente Osmeña Circle burst into candlelight as devotees walked to the Basilica del Sto. Niño in Cebu City where the first Novena Mass was held in the run up to Sinulog Day on Sunday that will be highlighted by the annual Grand Parade.

Other activities are the fluvial procession, the grand procession along Cebu City’s main streets and the high masses officiated by high ranking Catholic church officials.

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña also advised the public to be very vigilant when attending the various activities.

While he said everyone was welcome to attend the Sinulog celebrations in Cebu, Cebu Osmeña said he cannot assure that what happened in Hilongos will not happen here.

“It’s a very big threat. I’m not going to fool the Cebuanos by giving them any kind of assurance because I have none to give. But if people are conscious, then the chances of that happening go down,” he told reporters.

Sinulog is of the country’s grandest festivals as it celebrates the Pista Senyor or feast of the Holy Child.
