Duterte orders clampdown on illegal recruiters

President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday Oct. 18 called for the clampdown on illegal recruiters that has long posed a threat to the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) community.

In an anniversary event of TV show “Buhay OFW” and the Anti-Trafficking OFW Movement, Duterte said he felt sorry for OFWs who were “tied to the bondage of slavery” in other countries.

“I cannot imagine human beings, for that matter, and I’m talking about our countrymen now – being sold to the slave markets elsewhere and they are tied to the bondage of slavery for all of their lives – no longer connected with their families, totally lost, and they are there as slaves,” ABS-CBN quoted Duterte as saying.

He added that those who know victims of human trafficking should seek help from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

“If you want to help, go direct to the NBI or CIDG of the police. And they are the investigative – it is the investigative body of the police force,” ABS-CBN quoted Duterte as saying.
