Mobile calls through WhatsApp was shortlived in the UAE on Thursday as the service remains blocked, says a telecom operator.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) also announced Friday that its ban on VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol still stands.
Mobile users in UAE reportedly were able to call through WhatsApp the morning of Thursday. Local newspaper reported that calls could be made through the instant messaging app using du or Etisalat networks within the UAE and abroad.
A source quoted by Emarat Al Youm newspaper said the activation of video and voice calls was due to a global update last night on WhatsApp, Gulf News reports.
