Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have issued a joint statement in response to the comment of the High Commissioner for Human Rights that their move against Qatar will impact on many people’s human rights.
In the joint statement responding to the June 14 comment of Zeid Raad al-Hussein, the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Permanent Missions of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain to the UN in Geneva said they have exhausted all means to convince Qatar to stop supporting terrorist organizations.
“The decision to cut ties with Qatar are a sovereign right of the states concerned and aim to protect their national security from the dangers of terrorism and extremism,” the joint statement read.
The three Permanent Missions also said many measures have been taken addressing humanitarian and health cases, and hotlines were established in each country so that cases can be reported and appropriate action be taken in a manner consistent with international obligations under international human rights law and the long humanitarian traditions of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The three countries further said they are willing to continue working with the concerned parties to maintain security, to combat terrorism and to safeguard the stability and well-being of the people of the region, including Qataris.
