VAT exemption on items sold in Dubai airports sought

A company executive calls for the continuing Value-Added Tax (VAT) exemption of items on sale at Dubai airports amid an impending plan to impose a 5% VAT by January next year, Arabian Business reported.

“It is our view that VAT will not be applicable on products sold airside at Dubai’s airports as they are being sold to passengers leaving the emirate,” said Bernard Creed, Dubai Duty Free’s senior vice president for finance, in an exclusive interview with Arabian Business.

The report said the government is already holding workshops to educate businesses on the plan and its implications.

Creed told Arabian Business of his hopes for refund mechanism on the VAT paid by tourists in their purchases while on a tourist visit.
