Four Filipinos on their way from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for the traditional Good Friday “Bisita Iglesia” died when the car they were riding on, along with two other friends, burst one of its tires and was hit from behind.
Identities of the victims were being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
According to initial reports, three of the car’s passengers alighted to check the burst tire when the speeding vehicle rammed their car.
Lito Mendoza, who said two of the victims – one deceased, the other in the hospital – are his relatives, said the group was on their way to St. Joseph Church in Abu Dhabi and were cruising on Al Shahama Highway when the mishap happened at 7am.
His niece was scheduled to have a leg surgery while the other survivor is in the intensive care unit. Both were confined at Al Rahba Hospital in Shamama.
The remains of the four were at Sheikh Khalifa Hospital mortuary, Mendoza said.
Asst. Labor Attaché Jay Jasper Javines said the matter has been referred to the embassy’s Assistance to Nationals (ATN) section.
“We are waiting for the police report. The embassy’s ATN will coordinate with the Philippine Consulate General on this,” Javines said. (Jojo Dass)
