Global COVID-19 death toll climbs to 21,000

The total number of fatalities due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has reached the 21,000-mark, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
Spain’s death toll has surpassed China’s record, making it the second-highest next to Italy.
More than 467,000 people have been diagnosed with the dreaded virus globally prompting countries around the world to impose lockdown measures to flatten the curve to halt the spread of the disease.
Around 2.5 billion people or approximately 30% of the global population were under various phases of lockdown policies due to coronavirus pandemic, according to CNN’s latest estimate.
The United Nations has called for solidarity among countries amid the global crisis, launching an appeal for $2 billion of funds to aid the poor.
“Covid-19 is threatening the whole of humanity – and the whole of humanity must fight back,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.
“Global action and solidarity are crucial. Individual country responses are not going to be enough,” he added.
