The death toll from the novel coronavirus has risen to 56 as China continues to ramp up efforts to contain the deadly disease.
Fifteen more people were killed, 13 of which were reported in Hubei, the epicenter of the outbreak, while Shanghai reported its first death.

The National Health Commission said the number of infected spiked to 1975 cases nationwide.
President Xi Jinping warned that China is in a grave situation as health authorities scramble to prevent the outbreak which prompted the transport lockdown of central Chinese city of Wuhan, and 12 other cities.

Military doctors were deployed in Hubei and a hospital is being built in 10 days to accommodate patients which swarmed health facilities in the province, state-run Xinhua News reported.
Confirmed cases were also reported in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, and Nepal. The virus has also reached as far away as the United States, France, and Australia.
