UAE now one step closer to its 2021 goal for gender equality

The UAE had recently earned the 26th rank in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2019, reaching one step closer in attaining its goal of becoming part of the world’s top 25 countries in the UNDP GII by 2021.

UAE ranked the highest in the Arab world in the latest ranking.

“I am proud of this accomplishment which emphasises our ability to participate in further defining the future on the world stage,” Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council said in a series of tweets.

She thanked the support of their wise leaders, the cooperation of all the ministries and institutions in UAE to make the achievement possible.

“We are committed to continue our efforts with our partners to achieve this goal,” Her Highness continued.

UAE ranked 49th globally in a 2015 UNDP-GII report, this led to the creation of the UAE Gender Balance Council in the same year.

The Gender Inequality Index, GII was an index used to measure the gender inequalities in three important aspects of human development: reproductive health, empowerment, and economic status.

It was introduced in the 2010 Human Development Report by the UNDP.
