Manila’s Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) has cancelled the resolution that authorizes the extension of the concession agreement between MWSS, Maynilad and Manila Water.
This means that the agreement between the government’s MWSS with Maynilad and Manila Water will expire this 2022.
MWSS Chairman Reynaldo Velasco, in a report from ABS-CBN News, said that the decision is a nod to President Duterte’s pronouncement that the extension of the concession agreement was ‘onerous’, ‘lopsided’ and goes against government and public interest.
The cancelled resolution that was previously approved during the Presidency of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo allowed the two water concessionaries to continue their operations in a contract that extends until 2037.
Earlier, both Maynilad and Manila Water have agreed to no longer push the government to pay for revenue losses that reached almost Php11B. Both water concessionaires also announced that they will no longer implement the rate hike scheduled for January 2020.
No official statements have been released from the side of either Maynilad or Manila Water regarding the cancellation of the concession agreement as of press time.
