Abu Dhabi: A high court in Abu Dhabi fined a woman Dh10,000 and ordered her deportation from the UAE after she was convicted of possessing about one gm of Marijuana, a newspaper reported on Monday.
The court of first instance had earlier issued that sentence, prompting the unnamed woman to appeal, the Arabic language daily Al Bayan said.
A court of appeals also fined her and ordered her deportation. The woman then appealed with the Court of Cassation, which upheld that verdict.
Police arrested the woman at Abu Dhabi Airport after they found the marijuana in her bag. She claimed that she bought the drugs in the Netherlands for personal use and that she did not know it is banned in the UAE.
The judge dismissed the defense lawyer’s argument that it was not her intention to bring drugs into the UAE.
