Thirty-nine people, believed to have come from Bulgaria, were found dead inside a truck container today in Waterglade Industrial Park in Greys, Essex, England.
A report from the Associated Press (AP) says authorities have yet to identify the victims. Essex Police Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner said it could be a lengthy process.
Ambulance workers were the ones who found the truck. According to the same AP report, the truck was said to have entered Britain via the Welsh port of Holyhead on Saturday.
Mariner said this is a tragic incident involving a lot of people. The police have also taken into custody a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland on suspicion of murder. The police are also working with Thurrock Council to mitigate against any “local” impact to the investigation of the scene. The scene have been cordoned off from the public and the industrial park also remains closed.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Boris Johnson pledged to work closely with Essex Police to establish what happened. He also expressed sympathy to those who died and to their families, as well.
