Instagram takes steps versus health misinformation

Instagram has started its crackdown on posts promoting weight loss and cosmetic procedures.

The Facebook-owned company said that it’s taking action to restrict or remove posts about products claiming to be “miraculous” remedies for losing weight or spurring other cosmetic changes, as per a report from NBC News.

Instagram’s Emma Collins said in an emailed statement that the company wants to be a “positive place for everyone that uses it,” the report said.

Instagram said that the move is meant to “reduce the pressure that people can feel sometimes as a result of social media.”

The report noted that health misinformation has become rampant on Instagram and other social media sites. Some companies have already started to clamp down on this kind of content.

Pinterest has removed anti-vaccination ads and other content in February. In May, Instagram announced plans to remove hashtags that promote anti-vaccination.
