Malaysia’s queen, the Raja Permaisuri Agong clarified she did not order the arrest of the people who allegedly insulted her on social media.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong briefly returned to Twitter to express disappointment at the police.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong said she and the king did not ask the police to act and she was very upset upon learning that an activist in the western city of Klang was arrested last Friday for allegedly posting insults.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong – full name Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah Sultan Iskandar – is the wife of Malaysia’s current head of state.
In a series of tweets that have now been deleted, the Raja Permaisuri Agong said she had left Twitter for personal reasons but briefly returned to express dismay over the arrests.
“I am truly upset that the police have detained those people. Through the years, my husband and I have never made any police report on bad things said about us,” Straits Times quoted her as saying.
“It’s a free country,” she added.
The Raja Permaisuri Agong was criticized on social media during Malaysia’s Independence Day celebrations last August 31 for taking lots of photographs.
Per a report by Malaysia Star newspaper, some netizens called out the Raja Permaisuri Agong for purportedly behaving like a small child.
