If you were a child born in the 1970s, you’ll probably remember how a single bread helped fill your stomach while in school.
Now, they’re really back in Marikina City after the city government revived the ‘Nutribun’ Program.
Kids in some elementary schools have already received the Nutribuns after it was launched on Aug. 20.
In a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA), Mayor Marcelino ‘Marcy’ Teodor said that that they’ve made a variety of the bread with malunggay and squash and its also paired with milk.
The said program will benefit 21,000 Kinder and Grade 1 public school children as the city government will source out funding from the Special Nutrition Fund of the city government.
After 120 days, Teodoro said these children will then be weighed and their health condition and performance in school will be assessed.
Teodoro said they have monitored cases of undernutrition especially among public school students who don’t have food as their ‘baon’.
Also, the city government is eyeing zero malnutrition in the city next year, and he believes that this program is key to attaining it.
The schools who are already giving out nutribuns have their own bakery called Nutri-Pan, according to a report by GMA News Online.
The latest version of the Nutribun is fortified with micronutrient-rich Malunggay and contains vitamins A, B-complex, C, calcium, and iron. Its production cost is pegged at P5 for each bun.
