At least 135,780 Closed Circuit Television Cameras or CCTV were installed in over 16,000 establishments in Ras Al Khaimah.
This is part of the police’s ‘Himaya’ or ‘Protection’ project.
The project hopes to deter crimes and improve security. The CCTV works 24 hours a day.
Some cameras were installed in government offices, business premises, residential compounds, vital premises like banks, gold shops and schools.
The project was announced in 2016 by Major-General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of Ras Al Khaimah Police. Authorities say that only the police can examine the CCTV footage.
Maj. Gen Al Nuaimi said that the cameras have enough storage space to save digital images up to 90 days.
