VISAYAS EARTHQUAKE UPDATE: Magnitude 4.2 aftershock hits Catbalogan

A magnitude 4.6 aftershock was reported in Catbalogan, Samar, following a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in Julian, Eastern Samar, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The aftershock, recorded an hour after a major earthquake in San Julian, was reported around 2:41 p.m., 22 kilometers northeast of Catbalogan, Samar.

The aftershock was of tectonic origin and had a depth of 5 kilometers, said Phivolcs.

In a related development, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum told ANC the two strong quakes that recently rocked Luzon and Visayas are not connected with each other.

The state seismology office warned that aftershocks from the two earthquakes may occur in the next “several days.”
