UK targets to hire more foreign nurses under adjusted requirements

The United Kingdom (UK) has adjusted one of its requirements for migrant nurses and midwives to ease their application process.

The International English Language Test System (IELTS) exam is one of the requirements for migrant nurses and midwives who want to work in the UK. The exam covers English writing, reading, listening, and speaking categories, reported ABS-CBN News.

However, many migrant nurses, including Filipinos, often fail the exam which require a minimum score of seven for all categories. Many nurses take the exam twice or thrice before passing the exam.

Under the adjusted IELTS requirements, the minimum score for writing was lowered to 6.5 instead of 7.

Health practitioner recruiter Pearl Cacanindin said that the adjusted IELTS requirements will help many Filipino nurses and midwives in securing their jobs in the UK.

“There are more chances now for nurses to come over to the UK because that was a major setback, ‘yung hindi sila mapakasa ng IELTS,” Cacanindin said.

“There will be a massive influx of overseas nurses into United Kingdom,” she added.

The new IELTS requirements was implemented on December 5.
