The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Monday, September 10, revealed that Xiamen Airlines’ fine for the runway mishap at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has been increased to Php72 million, more than double the initial fine.
During the Senate hearing on the runway mishap that happened in Manila’s main gateway, MIAA general manager Ed Monreal said they are currently discussing an additional fine against Xiamen Airlines which may bring the fine total to Php72 million.
Earlier, MIAA announced a Php33 million fine against Xiamen Airlines after one of its planes skidded off a runway at NAIA causing the closure of the main Manila runway for two days.
Monreal said the fine covers recovery fees and opportunity losses as well as take off and landing losses, parking costs and staff overtime.
Monreal said the airline company has expressed its willingness to pay the initial amount.
“Nagbigay na sila ng indikasyon. I think they are coming on September 12 to 14. Pupunta sila dito at merong assurance na magbabayad sila sa unang binigay naming bill,” Monreal said.
On August 16, Xiamen Air Boeing 737 ripped off one of its engines resulting in multiple cancellation of flights after the runway was closed, leaving many passengers, including overseas Filipino workers, stranded.
