With four more years before his term ends, President Rodrigo Duterte said that he is thinking of stepping down from his post as he feels tired from fighting corruption and illegal drug use in the Philippines.
During his speech before business leaders in Malacanang last Tuesday, August 15, Duterte said that he already informed the police and military about his plans on resigning.
“At ang sinabi ko sa mga sundalo at pulis, ‘Guys, I want you to know that I am thinking of stepping down because I’m tired. While I am not against or angry against anybody, my chase against graft and corruption seems to be endless, and it has contaminated almost all government departments and offices,'” he said.
Duterte no longer mentioned how serious he is about his statement.
The president expressed his frustration regarding the worsening case of corruption and illegal drug use despite his efforts to eradicate the problem. He said that transactions involving illegal drugs in the country have increased from millions to billions of pesos.
Duterte said in the same speech that will not be able to fulfill his promise of completely ending corruption in the government.
This is not the first time the president made mention of his plans to step down from his post and cut his 6-year-term short.
