Cebu Pacific shifts to eco-friendly utensils in all flights

Philippines’ leading budget carrier Cebu Pacific (CebuPac) will shift from non-recyclable plastic spoons, forks, stirrers and cups to more eco-friendly utensils beginning October 1, 2018.

The airline company announced that the shift will cover all domestic and international flights including all flights handled by its subsidiary, Cebgo, in a move to reduce inflight wastes.

“As we continue to help pump-prime local economies through accessible, affordable and available flights, we are also committed to reducing our impact on the environment. We want to cut down on our use of non-recyclable plastic to only what is necessary,” said Lance Gokongwei, President and CEO of Cebu Pacific.

The plastic spoons and forks will be replaced by biodegradable utensils made of corn starch while stirrers will shift be made out of wood. The plastic cups given to passengers will also be phased out and will be replaced by paper cups.

Aside from the utensils, the airline company is also looking at ways to lessen fuel usage.

Positive reaction from passengers

Many passengers welcomed the news and the airline company’s move to promote a more sustainable and eco-friendly aviation services.
