Dubai Police help send 67-year-old man home after overstaying his UAE visa

A 67-year-old man is finally going home with the help of Dubai Police.

The Indian national named Vasudevan Madava Panicker, who had been staying without proper documents in Dubai, was sentenced to a 20-day prison time in October 2017 for violating the residency law, reported Gulf News.

Contrary to earlier reports that he had served lengthy jail term since the cancellation of his visa in 1987, Dubai Police clarified that the man had only served 20 days in jail.

“On the 25th of October 2017, he was sentenced to a fine of Dh2,000 and deportation. As he could not pay the fine, he was jailed only for 20 days and was set free on the 7th of July 2018,” a Dubai Police statement sent to Gulf News said.

The Indian consulate regretted the error regarding his case.

Moreover, Panicker’s failure to identify any relative delayed the process of issuing his travel documents, the consulate clarified.

His photo published in the Indian newspaper Malayala Manorama helped his brother to identify him.
