Romy Miclat, renowned Filipino artist and creator of Modhesh, a well-loved icon in Dubai, has passed away on Tuesday, May 8, in the Philippines.
The revered artist died after having pneumonia according to his family and friends, as reported by Gulf News.
He was 69.
Before his rise to fame overseas, Miclat was already a known architect, painter and cartoonist. He first made the character Modhesh for commissioned work under a Dubai-based ad agency.
It was the start of his illustrious journey and career in Dubai. In 1990, he put up his own agency there –Qanatar Advertising and Design.
Miclat’s artistic genius transcended beyond pencil and sketches. He also had a passion for music and loved to play the guitar.
The artist also did regular artwork for the Crime and Punishment section of 999 Magazine, published by New Perspective Media, on behalf of the UAE Ministry of Interior. NPM is also the publisher of The Filipino Times.
Messages of love and of mourning poured out on social media over Miclat’s untimely demise.
“R.I.P., Ninong Romulo L. Miclat. Isa kang alamat ng sining at nang dahil sa iyo, nahilig kami sa musika,” netizen Tolentino Rex said on Facebook.
