UAE to require emergency call system in vehicles

The UAE cabinet has made it mandatory for all vehicles there to have emergency communication systems in order to reduce the response time of authorities in case of traffic accidents.

This comes after the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (ESMA) issued the Emergency Call (ECall) System, the first of its kind in the Middle East.

The system is seen to reduce traffic response time by up to 40 percent, WAM reported.

According to Abdullah Al Maeeni, Director General of ESMA, the ECall system on 2021 vehicle models in the UAE, which will be delivered to the country in 2020.

Here is how it works: when a collision occurs between two vehicles, ECall operates and communicates via the vehicle driver’s mobile network as a communication channel.

The incident will then be reported to the nearest emergency point. The report will include details such as the time and location of the incident, and the car’s plate number.
