2 OFWs bound for Dubai rescued from alleged illegal recruiter

Philippine authorities were able to rescue six overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were ready to fly to United Arab Emirates through an alleged illegal recruitment agency.

The suspect, Mary Jane Alcala, was able to lure the victims by offering processing of tourist visas, birth certificates, and clearance, free of charge.

Four of the victims were rescued inside the suspect’s home while the remaining two, who were about to fly to Dubai as tourists, were already in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) waiting for their flight, reported GMA News.

One of the victims revealed the suspect gave them specific instructions when inside the airport.
Upon investigation, the documents provided for the OFWs were fake and were immediately confiscated by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). However, the affidavits of support and guarantee from the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi had official signatures, ribbons, and receipts. They do not have any name or information of the applicants.

Bernard dela Cruz of the NBI International Airport Investigation Unit said that a relative of the victims said there are employees of the Bureau of Immigration who are involved in the illegal recruitment.

“Ang stand po ng NBI ay imbestigahan at bigyan ng pagkakataon na marinig namin ang mga side ng mga taong itinuturo ng mga biktima,” he said.
