Pinoy chess icon, Eugene Torre in Dubai for exhibition games

DUBAI: Chess grandmaster Eugene Torre, who became a household name after beating then-reigning World Champion Anatoly Karpov in Manila back in 1976 and has remained an active player, putting on a strong performance at the 42nd Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan last year, is in town.

Torre arrived in the UAE on Dec. 21, 2017 to attend the 4th Annual Asian Excellence Award organized by the Asian Chess Federation. The event was held in Danat Hotel in Al Ain and the occasion was graced by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifah Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation.

Torre, considered to be among the strongest chess players the Philippines has produced, will be holding a simultaneous exhibition game in cooperation with the Filipino Chess Players League – UAE and Dubai Chess Club, wherein he will play against 20 chess players on December 29.

There will also a blitz game wherein more than 50 players are expected to participate.

There will be a meet-and-greet at 3pm with Eugene Torre; games start at 4pm. The venue was provided by Dubai Chess Club located in Abu Hail next to the Dubai Bowling club.

“This is a great opportunity to further promote all chess players and enthusiasts especially among Filipinos living in the UAE. The tourney will also promote friendship and camaraderie,” said Torre in an email interview with The Filipino Times.

“Personally, I really love to play in every place I visit, whenever there is an opportunity. It’s like a challenge and setting up a record,” he added.

The event was made also with the support of the Philippine Sports Commission headed by Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez and NCFP with Cong. Prospero “Butch” Pichay, Jr. at the helm.
