PH condemns Barcelona attack; 4 Filipinos among injured

The Philippine government condemned on Friday the deadly attack in Barcelona, Spain that left at least 13 people dead and injured around a hundred others.

“The Philippines condemns in the strongest terms this disturbing act of terror perpetrated by extremists against innocent men, women and children in Barcelona,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said in a statement.

A van plowed through pedestrians in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas tourist district on Thursday, killing 13 people (as of this posting) and injuring around a hundred.

Members of an Irish family of Filipino descent were hurt in the terror attack.

DFA said the Philippine Honorary Consulate went to the hospital to check on the injured Irish citizens of Filipino descent, but their names were withheld.

Honorary Consul Jordi Puig Roches reported that the Filipino family, which includes a mother and a father and their two children, were among injured.

Roches said the mother and the daughter (names withheld) have been discharged from the hospital, while the father and the son remain under observation.

The Philippine Embassy in Madrid and the Honorary Consulate in Barcelona are working with authorities to check on the safety of 20,000 other Filipinos in the region.
