Nearly 700 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and beneficiaries are now positioned to land better opportunities abroad as they were able to acquire information and communication technology (ICT) skills, an advantage for Filipinos seeking jobs overseas.
James Mendiola, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 6 officer-in-charge, said 690 OFWs and beneficiaries in Western Visayas completed the agency’s ICT training programs, which run from January to June 2017.
“Filipinos are increasingly becoming reliant on digital years. In recent years, the OWWA ICT Certificate of Completion have proven to be useful to OFWs and their beneficiaries, most of them teachers, who are looking for employment,” the Manila Bulletin quoted Mendiola as saying.
The ICT lessons could also help OFWs communicate with their families through the Internet.
“Even though some may find it difficult to understand these at first, it is not too late for anyone to adjust to the changes. It is never too late to learn something new,” he said.
In the UAE, information technology professionals are among the top skills in high demand.
