Former senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani’s daughter, Lila Shahani, Secretary General of the Philippine National Commission to UNESCO, confirmed her mother passed away at 2:40 a.m. on Monday at the age of 87, following a month-long stay in the intensive care unit (ICU).
The former senator acquired infections and pneumonia during her confinement. She was supposed to have chemotherapy for her Stage 4 colon cancer, according to ABS-CBN News.
Ramos-Shahani was elected as senator in 1987. She headed the committees on foreign affairs, culture, and arts, education and agriculture. She was also a member of the Commission on Appointments.
She was also appointed as one of the members of the Board of Directors of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan by
President Rodrigo Duterte.
The Palace presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said is saddened by the news of former senator and career diplomat Leticia Ramos Shahani’s passing this morning.
“Senator Shahani served the nation well as Senator of the Republic and worked tirelessly in the executive branch in various capacities under different administrations,” he added as quoted by the Manila Bulletin.
Abella also extended the government’s condolences to the family and friends of the late senator. “She was a profound humanist and her voice will be missed,” he said.
The former Senator was married to a former Indian writer and professor, Ranjee Shahani, with whom she has 3 children. -KCO
