Expat to face jail term for defaming a police officer

DUBAI: A 29-year-old Filipino male has admitted to posting images of a police officer in uniform on Instagram with a caption saying he is a homosexual offering sexual services.

The accused is also charged at Dubai Criminal Court with threatening to defame the officer if he did not pay him Dh8,000 and with using telecommunication to assault the privacy of the officer, reported The National.

He reportedly confessed to all charges in court on Thursday.

Both the Filipino and the Yemeni police officer, whose age was not given, have been charged with having consensual sex. The officer has been referred to Dubai Court of Misdemeanors, the report said.

The policeman reportedly said he was friends with the Filipino but that he was contacted by other friends who told him that his picture in uniform was on Instagram along with inappropriate words.

“I told them it was not me who posted them and I headed to the police station to report the matter,” he was quoted as saying.

He reportedly said he was then questioned by his superior and later arrested by CID officers and referred to a forensic expert.

During questioning by CID the policeman reportedly said the Filipino posted the picture and another one of his father, images that he had sent the Filipino a year ago.

He told investigators the Filipino had threatened him to post the pictures if he did not agree to be his lover and then asked him for Dh8,000, said the news portal.

Court records did not offer the circumstances of the alleged sexual relationship the pair had. A verdict will be given on November 21, The National reported.
