A worker was killed while 19 others were injured after a workers’ bus was struck by a truck along Al Yalayis Street in Dubai, authorities said.
According to Dubai Police, the crash happened near the Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Bridge heading toward Emirates Road.
Brigadier Jumaa Salem Bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, said initial investigations showed the bus had suddenly stopped in the middle of the road because of a technical malfunction before it was hit from behind by a truck.
Authorities said the truck driver allegedly failed to maintain a safe distance and did not notice the stopped vehicle in time.
The collision killed one worker and injured 19 others. Police said eight victims suffered critical injuries, two sustained moderate injuries, while nine others sustained minor injuries.
All injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Traffic patrols and accident investigation teams were immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area, assist rescue operations, and manage traffic flow by diverting vehicles to alternative routes.
Following the incident, Dubai Police renewed warnings to motorists about the dangers of stopping vehicles in the middle of roads, especially during mechanical breakdowns or emergencies.
Police reminded drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before traveling and stressed that stopping in active road lanes is considered a major traffic violation that could lead to fatal accidents.
Authorities advised motorists whose vehicles break down to immediately contact police for assistance instead of remaining stationary on the roadway.
Under UAE traffic regulations, stopping in the middle of the road carries a fine of Dh1,000 and six black points, while obstructing traffic may result in additional penalties.
Dubai Police also reminded drivers to activate hazard lights, prioritize passenger safety, and place warning triangles behind stalled vehicles whenever possible.
