Discussions between the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and Greece have reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of Filipino seafarers serving aboard Greek-owned vessels.
In a statement released on Thursday, the DMW said the talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the Philippines and Greece, particularly on issues affecting Filipino crew members in the global maritime industry.
The discussions addressed concerns raised by the Greek delegation, including the impact of regional conflicts on shipping operations, economic support mechanisms for Filipino seafarers, and the continued digitalization of maritime processes. DMW officials responded to these issues, emphasizing the importance of sustained collaboration to protect overseas Filipino workers.
The meeting was attended by DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, along with several assistant secretaries and undersecretaries, Greek Ambassador to the Philippines Ioannis Pediotis, and representatives from 43 licensed manning agencies and Greek ship principals.
According to the DMW, the engagement forms part of the directive of Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to deepen partnerships with foreign governments such as Greece, especially in industries where overseas Filipino workers have a strong and long-standing presence.
