Vatican officials on Wednesday transferred the body of Pope Francis to St. Peter’s Basilica, where mourners are now lining up to pay their final respects.
The move marks the start of public viewing ahead of his funeral on Saturday, April 26.
The late pontiff passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. His body will lie in state until Friday evening, giving members of the public time to honor his legacy.
Thousands are expected to attend the funeral rites in St. Peter’s Square, including global leaders such as Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other dignitaries from Europe and Latin America.
In line with his personal wishes, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, diverging from traditional papal burial sites.
