Telegram introduces group video calling feature

A group video chat option has been added by messaging chat app Telegram to its mobile and desktop apps, after the platform highlighted bringing in this addition earlier in April 2021.

Telegram announced that group video calls will be limited to the first 30 people who join a voice chat. The messaging software app’s developers stated that users can also share their screens during a video call. It also assured its users that this limit will be increased soon.

Voice chats in any group on the platform can be turned into video calls by tapping the camera icon to turn on your device’s video. Meanwhile for audio calls, Telegram revealed that it could host an unlimited number of users.

In its latest update, Telegram has also added several new features that include improved noise suppression and animated backgrounds.

In January 2021, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov stated the company had reached 500 million active users, including individuals who shifted to their platform after the Facebook-owned rival chat platform WhatsApp introduced of its new privacy policy.

However, Telegram’s introduction of group video calls still falls behind WhatsApp, which had 2 billion users as of February and had added group video and voice calling in 2018. (AW)
