More than 80 police units responded, including the special events unit, which is meant to respond to large-scale incidents.
Some passengers that were trapped would have to use specialized equipment to get them out.
According to Officer Daniel Segura, sleet, rain and slick roads likely contributed to the huge collision.
Jason McLaughlin told The Weather Channel in an on0air interview that the ice formations on the road appeared to have caused a number of drivers to lose control of their vehicles.
After the aftermath, the interstate was closed. A reunification center for those with family members who may have been involved in the pileup was set up at Fort Worth’s Riverside Community Center. (ES)
