WhatsApp clarifies new privacy policy

Privacy of users’ messages with family and friends will not be affected by the new privacy policy that WhatsApp recently introduced.

It issued a clarification on Tuesday saying that the update includes changes related to messaging a business on the platform, which is optional. This will also provide transparency about how it collects and uses data.

“Neither WhatsApp nor Facebook can read your messages or hear your calls with your friends, family, and co-workers on WhatsApp. Whatever you share, it stays between you. That’s because your personal messages are protected by end-to-end encryption. We will never weaken this security and we clearly label each chat so you know our commitment,” read their statement on their website.

The app still retains its end-to-end encryption, so users won’t have to worry about their shared location. Not even Facebook can see it.

Even your contacts won’t be shared to other apps Facebook offers.

What other aspects of its privacy policy that WhatsApp clarifies?

WhatsApp uses group membership to deliver messages and to protect their service from spam and abuse. They don’t share this data with Facebook for ads purposes. Again, these private chats are end-to-end encrypted so they can’t see the content.

Users can set their messages to disappear. For additional privacy, users can choose to set their messages to disappear from chats after they send them. (CC)
