Former congressman Rey Umali dies at 63

Former Oriental Mindoro Representative Rey Umali has passed away. He was 63 years old.

Or. Mindoro 2nd District Representative Alfonso Umali Jr. confirmed in a DZBB interview on Thursday that his brother died of cardiac arrest this morning.

Rey Umali suffered late stage liver cancer and has been diagnosed with COVID-19 in December, according to his brother.

Alfonso said that the congressman had a medical checkup before and was diagnosed to have fatty liver.

His medical checkups were put on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Umali was able to get another check up on December 12 but was diagnosed to have COVID-19 and late stage liver cancer.

“Noong December 12, nagpa-checkup siya, doon nakita na may COVID na siya. Tapos nakita na may Stage 3 cancer siya. Tapos ilang days lang na-aggravate naging Stage 4 liver cancer,” the brother said.

Umali was admitted in the intensive care unit or ICU on December 21 and was intubated on December 26.

“Kahapon, nakakakita ng bacteria sa kanyang liver. Ngayong umaga, bumaba na ang dugo niya tapos nag-cardiac arrest kaninang umaga,” the brother added.

Umali served as three term congressman but lost when he ran as governor in the 2019 polls.
