Experts warn COVID-19 cases in Saudi could reach 200,000 in weeks as total number of cases now at 2,795

Saudi Arabia has reported 43 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the total number to 2,795. With this, experts have warned that the cases could reach 10,000 to 200,000 in the next few weeks if residents do not take the precautionary measures seriously.

According to the Ministry of Health, the number of cases will soar if a section of people in the country are not serious about following the orders of the government to alleviate the spread of the disease—such as staying at home, practicing social distancing, and observing proper hygiene.

In an interview with Saudi Press Agency, Minister of Health Dr. Tawfiq Al-Rabiah said that the increase in the number of cases depend on the cooperation of everyone in the Kingdom, noting that some members of the society are not dealing with the epidemic with “adequate seriousness.”

“All of you have witnessed such practices and behaviors in the past days by some people and this indicates that we need to take other measures to protect us and the society from these people, as we face a decisive moment today which calls for raising our sensibility in order to be a responsible society,” Saudi Press Agency quoted the minister as saying.

Aside from the new cases, the Ministry also reported three new deaths, with the total number now at 41. In addition, the Kingdom also confirmed 64 new recoveries—bringing the total to to 615.
