The first Filipino-made anime series Barangay 143, which premiered in the Philippine television on October 21, is set to hit international TV screens—specifically in Southeast Asia.
“The plan is to have it broadcast outside the Philippines, as well,” August Media executive producer Jyotirmoy Saha told Inquirer.
“We make animation for global consumption. Not many people know that some of the other shows that we’ve made were aired in more than a hundred countries,” he added. “We consider this a good indicator for us to start creating for the domestic market, too.”
Produced by ASI Animation Studios and Japan’s TV network TV Asahi, the first Filipino-made anime is a collaboration between the Philippines’ Synergy88 and Singapore’s August Media Holdings.
Barangay 143 is an original animated series about a lost youngster in search of a father and how he finds a family in a basketball team. It features voice roles from Filipino celebrity cast including Migo Adecer, Julie Anne San Jose, Ruru Madrid, Kelley Day, John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, and Cherie Gil.
Aside from Tagalog, Barangay 143 will also have an English-language release. According to reports, TV Asahi and August Media Holdings will be responsible for the international distribution of the anime.
