Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu became a household name in Asia after she gave life to the character of Shan Cai, the female protagonist of Meteor Garden.
The show, which was aired during the early 2000s, became highly popular in the Philippines. It narrates the story of a girl who finds herself being the apple of the eye of four students, known as the F4, from well-off families at her university.
However, Hsu recently revealed on her Weibo account, a social media platform widely used in China and nearby countries, that she did not like portraying her iconic character.
“Yes, I admit, when I first got the role of Shan Cai, I told the director, ‘Shan Cai is such a terrible person! I hate her, I don’t know how to portray this role.’ The director talked to me for a long time, telling me that she was young and naive about love, and just an ordinary girl who was suddenly showered with love from two handsome guys, so it was unavoidable that she would act a little out of the ordinary…,” Hsu wrote.
“In any case, I didn’t like Shan Cai halfway through filming, but I still tried my best to portray her in a way that would make audiences not hate her too much! Those days, the audience was very pure, so they let her off the hook easily,” she added.
Attached to her post was a throwback photo of the cast of Meteor Garden.
Meanwhile, fans of Meteor Garden are excited for the release of its modern remake which will premiere some time later this year.
ABS-CBN previously announced that it earned the rights for the remake of Meteor Garden.
Its creator Angie Chai, reported ABS CBN, has been working on its sequel since last year.
The new F4 will be portrayed by Taipei native Darren Cheng, 22, and Chinese actors Dylan Wang, 19, Connor Leong, 23, and Caesar Wu, 21.
The remake reportedly has a massive budget of US$23.74 million, which is 30 times larger than its 2001 predecessor.
