Gabriela commends Angel Locsin after PGT episode

Women’s rights group Gabriela took it to Facebook to thank TV actress Angel Locsin for standing up against women objectification on the recent episode of Pilipinas Got Talent (PGT).

The PGT episode which was aired last March 3 went viral on social media over the weekend after a sexy girl group called “Play Girls” decided to perform a provocative “carwash” dance number.

The group was not able to advance to the competition after Locsin and co-judge Vice Ganda rejected their performance.

After the performance was aired, members of Play Girls attacked and criticized Locsin for not supporting their performance through their Facebook accounts.

Nevertheless, Locsin was highly praised by netizens who saw the episode for uplifting feminism and women’s rights.

A day after the episode was aired, Gabriela also commended the 32-year-old actress for staying truthful to her advocacy which is to promote women’s rights.

“GABRIELA commends movie/television star Angel Locsin for her firm stance against the objectification of women as exemplified by her recent statement in a local talent show on national TV,” the party list’s statement said.

The group further said that women objectification is a social issue that needs to be addressed.

“Women’s objectification is widespread because it brings in huge corporate and private profit. It is also a profitable endeavor for unscrupulous politicians who use women’s bodies to gain favor from powerful figures or entities or to trivialize pressing social issues by using sex as entertainment.

“It is one issue that past governments never bothered to address, and which is now even abetted by the Duterte regime that uses crude sexism in order to pump up bloodlust among its minions or as a cheap ploy to garner public attention,” the group added.

The group has also encouraged other famous public personalities to use their celebrity status as a platform to promote women’s rights.

“We call on more public personalities like Ms. Locsin to use their power to influence public opinion to promote women’s rights, something that is badly needed particularly today amidst the misogyny wantonly being displayed by the highest officials of the land,” they said.
